Apsou répandait le bonheur et l'abondance à travers la terre, et constituait une source de connaissances et de sagesse. Réticente à s engager dans la bataille, Tiamat décida de se venger lorsque Apsou fut tué par le dieu Ea. C'est le fils d'Ea, le grand dieu Mardouk, né des eaux d'Apsou, qui fut désigné pour défier Tiamat. La bataille sanglante qui s'ensuivit aboutit à.la création du monde et du ciel. Selon une tradition de la mythologie sumérienne, la déesse Nammu façonna les premiers hommes à partir d'argile extraite des eaux d'Apsou.
